The ruling came in response to legal action questioning the use of the "challenging approach" to "tactical questioning" by an Iraqi held in 2004.
But the High Court heard the approach was not currently used in Afghanistan due to a lack of trained personnel.
A court hearing in December explored the lawfulness of British military interrogation techniques.
The method of questioning prisoners subject to the legal challenge was generally employed soon after they were captured, judges were told.
In a written ruling, Mr Justice Collins said: "The approaches are due to be deployed in tactical questioning in Afghanistan this coming year.
"It is to be noted that the challenging approach is not at present permitted for tactical questioning in Afghanistan since there are an insufficient number of trained personnel available."
