Labour's David Shearer is safe in his job, winning the endorsement of his caucus in the latest in a string of leadership tests.
Confidence in Mr Shearer's leadership was put to the vote at a meeting of Labour's caucus in west Auckland on Monday morning.
While the outcome of the vote has been made public, the tally of votes will be kept secret, as per Labour party convention.
It was expected Mr Shearer would be guaranteed 100 per cent loyalty, following senior MP David Cunliffe's failed coup attempt a short time after the party's conference in November.
At Ratana Church celebrations last month, Mr Cunliffe said Mr Shearer had his full support.
However, walking in to the caucus meeting on Monday, Mr Cunliffe would not say how he would be voting.
"I don't discuss secret ballots," he said.
Before the meeting, Mr Shearer told media he was confident about the vote.
"I haven't polled, to be honest with you. I haven't spent any time over the weekend thinking about it," he said.
He supported keeping the tally of votes secret.
"It's always been a secret vote, it's the way the Labour Party has always held it, I'm willing to go with that convention myself as well."
The vote is a new measure, approved by Labour members at the party's conference in November, which makes it possible for just 40 per cent of MPs to roll the leader at a vote to be held within three months after a general election.
This is the first such vote, with the next likely to take place in early 2015.
If Labour's caucus had split over his leadership on Monday, Mr Shearer would have needed to retain the support of 60 per cent of caucus plus one extra MP to keep his job.
If he failed to do so, the party's wider membership would have a leadership vote for the first time.
