Syrian jets dropped cluster bombs on a crowded playground on Sunday, in what activists called an act of revenge for a rebel victory at a nearby military airport.

A Responsibility to Photograph, and Remember
Tyler Hicks spent 10 days photographing in Gaza City, where he found the scene of the conflict accessible, but not without risks.

The New York Times is tracking the human toll of the conflict in this feature. The primary source is the online video that has allowed a widening war to be documented like no other, and posts try to put the video into context. Edited by Liam Stack
  • Syrian rebels claimed to shoot down two government helicopters in two days, and used videos posted online to back up their claims. If true, the incidents point to an increasingly well-armed insurgency that is capable of more sophisticated attacks.
Government Helicopters Face Greater Risk as Rebels Gain Heavier Arms
Syrian rebels claimed to have shot two government helicopters out of the sky in the last two days outside of Aleppo, the country's largest city. This video from Tuesday shows an Mi-8 helicopter struck by what appears to be a missile. Another clip shows the craft's fiery crash into a field. If the rebels' claims are true, the episodes would be a powerful demonstration of the rebels' increasingly sophisticated arsenal as well as their growing ability to contest government control of the skies.

Because of both the altitude of the helicopter and the trail of smoke left by the projectile used, it appears that the aircraft was struck by some form of missile, says my colleague C.J. Chivers in an in-depth analysis of the attack written on The Times' At War Blog. We do not know the exact type of weapon used to down the helicopter in this video because we are only shown its impact, not its launch. Videos posted online of the second rebel attack on a helicopter show only its aftermath, so we cannot verify if it was downed by a missile or some other weapon. This video shows the helicopter shot down on Tuesday as it slowly descends before crashing into an open field. Another clip shows the burned wreckage that rebels claim is the aftermath of a second helicopter shot down on Wednesday. This graphic video shows the bloody body of that aircraft's pilot.
