U.S. Capitol Is Locked Down After Reports of Gunfire
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots outside
the Capitol after 2 p.m., sparking a huge police response and heightened
security inside the Capitol, which was already tense during shutdown
negotiations. Members not near their own offices were asked to go to the
nearest office, and shelter there.
Police Broadcast Alert for People to 'Shelter in Place'
U.S. Capitol Police broadcast an alert for people working in the U.S. Capitol complex to remain locked in their offices. "There is a report of gunfire on Capitol hill," the alert being broadcast on loudspeaker said. "Shelter in place."
Police were seen swarming outside the building. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D., Va.) was on a balcony on the south side of the Capitol and said he heard what he thought were seven or eight gunshots in rapid succession. Police were ushering tourists away from the west front of the Capitol.
