As Aleppo Fight Looms, a Bit of Rebel Public Relations Updated July 26A group of fighters spent time on Thursday currying favor with the local population by collecting some garbage and cleaning a portion of the street in the city's Sakhour neighborhood, which for the moment remained under rebel control.Guns Nearby, Rebel Fighters Pause to Clean a Street in Hope of Winning SupportersWith a showdown between rebels and Syrian forces anticipated in the commercial hub of Aleppo, a group of antigovernment fighters spent time on Thursday currying favor with the local population by cleaning a street in the city's Sakhour neighborhood, which for the moment was under rebel control. The men, some with assault rifles slung over their shoulders, packed garbage into a bulldozer and used the hose on a tractor to spray the road. Nearby shops appeared to be open despite fear of a looming battle.
Antigovernment activists in Aleppo confirmed the video's location, near a central roundabout in the city's eastern Sakhour area. Two videos of the cleanup were posted to an account affiliated with rebels in Aleppo. An activist reached in the city said the anticipated big fight had not yet started.
It was unclear how representative the cleanup efforts of a few rebel fighters in Sakhour were of the broader activities of the loosely affiliated Free Syrian Army in the rest of the city, where fighting has halted many government services and many residents have fled.
Another longer clip showed rebels hosing down the street — and each other — in Sakhour. The videos followed clips of destruction in the city as rebel and government forces lobbed artillery at each other and fighters stormed at least one police station.
