GAZA — A Palestinian prisoner with cancer died in an Israeli hospital on
Tuesday, prompting accusations of medical malpractice by Palestinian
leaders.
The prisoner, Hassan al-Turabi, 22, is the third Palestinian prisoner to
die this year. The deaths of the first two, in February and April, set
off protests in the West Bank and clashes with Israeli soldiers.
Mr. Turabi, of the West Bank city of Nablus, was arrested in January on
charges of throwing a gasoline bomb and possessing a weapon, according
to a spokeswoman for Israel’s prison service. She said prison officials
were aware that he had leukemia but believed that it was in remission.
When he became ill on Oct. 15, she said, he was transferred to a
hospital and released from prison the next day.
But Issa Qaraqe, the Palestinian minister for prisoner affairs, said in a
radio interview that Mr. Turabi had been vomiting blood for 10 days and
that he was only given tranquilizers.
“The prison administration knew his situation since his arrest, and knew
that he is in need of a treatment, and neglected the issue leading to
his death,” Mr. Qaraqe told Voice of Palestine radio. “This is a new
crime committed by Israel indicating a new danger regarding the health
situation of prisoners.”
