NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City
police officer has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges in the
February shooting of an unarmed suspect inside his home.
Officer Richard Haste was arraigned Wednesday in the death of 18-year-old Ramarley Graham. His bail has been set at $50,000.
The courtroom was filled with officers, relatives of the teen and their supporters.
The shooting stemmed from an NYPD investigation of street drug dealing. Police pursued Graham into his Bronx home. He was shot once at close range as his grandmother and 6-year-old brother stood nearby.
In a statement read by his lawyer, Haste said: "I thought he was going to shoot me so I shot him."
The lawyer says Haste yelled "show me your hands" and "police." He said other officers had radioed that Graham had a gun.
