Kerry on Syria: U.S. Can't Be "Spectators to Slaughter"
Secretary of State John Kerry and other top Obama administration officials urged lawmakers Tuesday to back a strike on Syria, insisting before a Senate panel that the U.S. has a moral responsibility to punish the Syrian regime for its apparent use of chemical weapons against civilians. "This is not the time to be spectators to slaughter," Kerry told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reiterating what he had told "Meet the Press" Sunday: that that tests on hair and blood samples from the site of the alleged chemical weapons attack had tested positive sarin gas, and that there was no reasonable doubt that it was Syrian President Bashar al-Assad who had ordered its use. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also testified Tuesday. "The word of the United States must mean something," Hagel said. On Wednesday, the committee is set to hold a second, classified hearing on Syria. Get More at NBC News
