Former Minnesota Viking Joe Senser gave a 17-minute statement Monday morning, condemning Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman for improperly prosecuting his wife.
He also apologized to the Minnesota Vikings and asked reporters to stop linking his name to the football team.
His statement came after Amy Senser's five-minute hearing so the judge who denied her request to stay out of prison during her appeal could explain his decision. Hennepin County District Judge Daniel Mabley said he will decide later whether to grant her release from prison.
Senser was wearing a short-sleeved prison issue sweat shirt, baggy jeans and eyeglasses. She turned and smiled at her family but didn't say anything during the hearing. It was her first time back in the courthouse since she was incarcerated July 9, when she was sentenced to 41 months in prison for the hit-and-run death of Anousone Phanthavong in 2011.
Joe Senser made his statement after the hearing, in the atrium of the courthouse.
In August, the Minnesota Court of Appeals said "summarily" denied a motion by Senser's attorney that she remain free while she appeals her conviction of two counts of criminal vehicular homicide.
Attorney Eric Nelson has been fighting for her release, arguing that the mother of two is not a flight risk and unlikely to commit a crime or intimidate witnesses.
Senser, convicted in May of two counts of felony criminal vehicular homicide, maintained she didn't know she hit anyone. COPY www.startribune.com
