Just days after he was voted in for his fifth term as Fifa president, Blatter, 79, has called for a congress to be called as quickly as possible so his successor can be found.
The FBI has confirmed to the New York Times that it is investigating Blatter as part of its investigation into alleged widespread corruption within Fifa.
At a surprise press conference called in Zurich yesterday evening, Blatter told reporters: "Fifa’s interest are dear to me. That’s why I have taken this decision. What counts most for me, is the institution of Fifa and football around the world."
