STATS: A 5,800-square-foot home with four bedrooms, six bathrooms and one half-bathroom, asking $6.3 million, or $1,086.21 a square foot. Property taxes in 2011 amounted to $51,190.Photos: An Oceanfront Estate in Maine
SELLER: Bruce D. Bent. Mr. Bent is an investment adviser.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD: The Local Buzz, a cafe and wine bar with live jazz music, is less than a mile away. Be sure to try the continental panini with prosciutto, Gruyère and fig jam. From the house, it's about 15 minutes' drive to the Portland Museum of Art, founded in 1882.
WHAT HE PAID: Mr. Bent estimates that he paid about $1.9 million for the entire estate in 1996, including the house, the original seven acres included with it and an additional seven-acre lot adjacent to the property.
WHY HE'S SELLING: "I'm 75, and two big homes are just too much to handle," says Mr. Bent, who spends six months of the year at his home in Florida.
WHAT HE'LL MISS: The five-car garage. Mr. Bent is a collector of classic automobiles.
WHAT HE WON'T: "The driveway," says Mr. Bent. "To fit with the rest of the home, it needs additional landscaping to make it look more gracious and park-like."
OTHERS SAY: Bruce Balfour of Coldwell Banker Cape Elizabeth has shown the house to clients and says the price is in the right ballpark considering the property's proximity to Portland and the airport and the home's original details. William Davisson of LandVest has the listing and says that the size of the estate and its coastal location justify the price. "A large oceanfront parcel is becoming exceedingly rare along the southern coast of Maine," says Mr. Davisson. COPIADO : http://online.wsj.com/article/
