Hundreds of drivers were left stranded as blizzards swept the UK
last night causing travel chaos. Freezing weather is expected to batter
Britain again today with temperatures dipping as low as -10C, sparking
fears that the conditions could claim scores of lives. Motorists in
Sheffield abandoned their cars (top left) and a coachload of passengers,
including one pregnant women, were forced to spend the night at Our
Lady and St Thomas Church. A snow-covered car was left at the side of

Hundreds
of drivers were left stranded as blizzards hit the UK last night
causing travel chaos and forcing two airports to close.
Freezing
weather is expected to batter Britain again today with temperatures
dipping as low as -10C, sparking fears that the conditions could claim
scores of lives.
Many motorists simply abandoned their vehicles in Sheffield last night as a blanket of white covered the Prince of Wales Road.
A
coachload of 30 people travelling from Sheffield to London, including
one pregnant woman, had to spend the night in a church after their bus
became stuck in the snow before leaving the south Yorkshire city.
Passenger
Chloe McIntosh told the BBC: 'Some people from the houses nearby have
come and offered us tea. Then they opened up the church.'

took shelter at Our Lady and St Thomas Church in Sheffield after
getting stuck at about 7pm and finally resumed their journey at 5.45am

Chantelle
Esposito, another passenger, said: 'The locals who have brought out
blankets, tea, coffee, food and shelter have been a blessing.
'I don't know where we would be at this time without them.'
Both
Liverpool's John Lennon Airport and Leeds Bradford International in
Yorkshire closed while their runways were cleared of snow as a band of
wet weather crossed the country from Merseyside and north Wales through
the Midlands and Yorkshire.
A
pilot called the police after being stuck on the tarmac at Manchester
Airport for three hours because it was waiting to be 'de-iced' by a
special vehicle after a dusting of snow.
A
yellow weather warning for snow is still in place today across the
whole of Scotland, and could affect both Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Met
Office forecaster Simon Partridge said that as as area of high pressure
moves through today, very cold conditions are expected to hit overnight.
'A
weather warning is still in place across Scotland for snow today. The
worst of the snow is over, but it could still be heavy in parts of
Scotland and high areas in North Wales.'
Lincolnshire
Police dealt with 35 incidents involving crashes caused by the snow in
the 12 hours between 8pm on Friday night and 8am Saturday morning.
Inspector
James Trafford said: 'We dealt with 35 road traffic incidents
overnight, plus about the same number of calls again due to obstructions
in the road caused by the snow.'
Firefighters
were called to a collision on the A46 at Osgodby near Market Rasen at
7.30pm last night and used cutting equipment to free one casualty from a
two-car crash.
Residents of the Derbyshire village of
Foolow woke up this morning to a thick covering of snow after a band of
the UK including the Midlands, Lancashire and Yorkshire were hit by a

Experts are warning that the elderly and frail will be most at risk, putting hospitals and nursing homes on alert.
Leek,
near the Peak District in Staffordshire, saw the worst of the snow
with 4in and Cranwell in Lincolnshire saw 2.75 in, the Met Office said.
Four
flights into Liverpool from Malta, Berlin and Bucharest were diverted
to Manchester Airport, while a fifth from the Isle of Man returned to
the island's airport.
Liverpool's
John Lennon Airport is open again but a spokesman said knock-on
disruption was expected, adding: 'We have had quite a deluge here.'
Leeds
Bradford was also forced to halt flights, with a notice on its website
last night saying: 'As a result of adverse weather conditions, Leeds
Bradford International Airport is presently closed.
'We recommend you contact your airline or tour operator and check the status of your flight before arriving at the airport.'
East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire also suspended flights because of snow.
Dozens of drivers spent the night in their cars as heavy snow fell in the Midlands and the north of England.

Dr
Stan Fowler told the BBC he was one of a 'handful' of drivers spending
the night in their cars at Woodhall Services on the M1.
'I arrived here at 20:30 and have bedded down for the night after parts of the car park became impassable,' he said.
'The
staff have been excellent and have brought duvets from the nearby hotel
and although it wasn't how I would have chosen to spend Boxing Day
night, it really hasn't been too bad at all.'
A
patient in need of medical care had to be rescued from their snowed-in
home late last night after an ambulance and a fire engine was unable to
reach them.
Firefighters
from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called out to the house in
Loxley, but when the engine got stuck in the snow, they sent round a 4X4
by rescue the casualty.
In the West Midlands, West Bromwich Albion FC and Manchester City played their Boxing Day fixtures in a blizzard.
At
least 1,824 homes were hit by a power cut in the Ashbourne area of the
Derbyshire Dales because of the severe weather last night.
Although
power was restored to many, Western Power Distribution said staff
struggled to get to customers because of snow and bad weather.
Temperatures
could drop as low as minus 10C (14F) in some places at the start of
next week as the cloud and wet weather gives way to clearer skies.
Public Health England urged people to keep an eye out for vulnerable friends and neighbours.
Malcolm
Booth, of the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners, said: 'We
could face a repeat of the horrendous excess winter deaths of 2012.'
A
Department for Transport spokesman said: 'As winter weather grips some
areas of the country we would advise people intending to travel to check
weather and local conditions before they set out.
'The
Highways Agency and local highway authorities across the country are
working hard to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.
'Passengers
travelling into or out of Kings Cross affected by over running
engineering work should check with National Rail Enquiries for service
information.'

After a warmer than average Christmas
Day yesterday, a thick frost was on the ground this morning and
temperatures will continue to drop
It was a frosty morning on the River
Frome in Dorset this morning but the clear skies made way for snow
clouds in many areas tonight
The NHS and local councils have been put on alert and Public Health England have urged people to check on elderly neighbours.
The
authority's Dr Angie Bone said: 'We encourage people to keep an eye on
the forecast and take the weather into account when planning activities
over the following days.
'We
also advise people to keep active in the home, have plenty of warm food
and drinks, and maintain indoor temperatures to at least 18°C,
particularly the older or very young, people with pre-existing health
conditions, or who are not very mobile. These groups can be particularly
vulnerable to the ill-effects of cold.'
She
added: 'Also take some time to think about how the bad weather may
affect your friends, family and neighbours: it's important we all do
what we can to protect those around us.
'If
you do need to go out, remember to wear lots of thin layers and shoes
with a good, slip-resistant grip to prevent any accidental falls.'
